If your heart is skipping beats, it may be a helpful idea to know about atrial fibrillation signs and symptoms. Regularly and rhythmically, natural processes operate your body’s many systems. These processes happen outside of your conscious awareness. For example, there are natural chemicals invisibly acting, reacting and responding as a matter of healthy chemistry. You don’t have to consciously instruct the chemicals in your body about what to do. It’s almost like they have a mind of their own and instinctively do what they were designed to do-keep you healthy and well.
People with undiagnosed atrial fibrillation (also called AFib)may start to unexpectedly experience their heart missing a beat, it may feel irregular or racing as well. When your heart misses a beat, it’s your heart’s way of saying, “Hey, pay attention to me!”If you are having skipped heart beats or irregular beats, it is a sign and a symptom of an electrical misfire. But it may also be a sign of other chemical and/or neurological imbalances internally occurring.
It may seem like an insignificant thing when your heart misses a beat. Many conditions, including some benign conditions may cause skipped beats, but so can atrial fibrillation. Only your doctor can diagnose if your irregular heartbeat is due to atrial fibrillation or another condition. For atrial fibrillation, if it only occasionally happens, it’s called paroxysmal (pronounced pair-ick-siz-mall) atrial fibrillation. However, paroxysmal AFib is still evidence of atrial fibrillation. AFib can be life threatening. That’s why it’s important to know about atrial fibrillation signs and symptoms and get checked out by a cardiologist or an electrophysiologist.
Specific Atrial Fibrillation Signs and Symptoms
When you have AFib (also called AF or atrial fibrillation) the most common sign and symptom a person experiencesis a quivering or irregular heartbeat, or sometimes a racing heartbeat. When a person develops atrial fibrillation, it can lead to stroke or other heart problems. During episodes of atrial fibrillation, the blood in your atrium does not flow as well and becomes stagnant, which can lead to blood clots.Blood clots can then lead to stroke. You want to pay attention to your body sending you signals something may be wrong. This is why it’s important to understand how to take care of yourself if you have AFib.
Other common AFib symptoms might include:
Rapid and/or irregular heartbeat
Generally feeling fatigued
Fluttering, quivering or “thumping” in your chest
Feeling short of breath and anxious
Feeling confused or feeling like you’re about to faint or actually fainting
Feeling fatigue during exercise
Some patients feel no symptoms
